[Article] Single Review: Kim Hyun Joong - "Lucky Guy"

After releasing "Break Down" earlier this year to commercial success, Kim Hyun Joong is back with a fresh new sound. How does "Lucky Guy" fare? Not bad, not bad at all.

"Lucky Guy" is all about quirk, attitude, and chaos -- fun chaos. It sounds like something straight out of a TV sitcom opening song from the early 2000's, with the finesse and production technology of 2011. The song is fun to listen to, and rather than barraging listeners with all these fancy auto-tune variants and overused synth loops, we're given actual instruments playing actual melodies.

The quirk of this song is highly dependent on the instruments - that gutsy electric guitar line and those raw, yet clean and smooth drums, but surprisingly, Hyun Joong's vocals do a lot for the overall effect too. 

Let's be honest. Hyun Joong has never been the best singer in K-Pop. He's easily out-sung by many, many other idols. However, he's always been consistently okay, and sometimes he has his good moments -- and "Lucky Guy" is one of them. His light and airy vocals are a good contrast to the arrangement, and prevent the song from going all over the place. All the other elements of the song are so intense that if someone with a bigger, sharper voice were to sing it, the song would be too much.

"Lucky Guy" starts rather simply, but another thing that draws in listeners is how fast the dynamics change. They don't change every two seconds or anything; you're still able to take in all the individual parts, but before you get bored, something changes, leaving you at the edge of your seat in anticipation of what's going to happen next.

The hook is also consistent with the entire theme running through the song -- it sticks with you, but it's not too repetitive. It's a hook you can actually hum to yourself, because you remember it and because it's humanly possible to sing it without fancy studio tricks. And that's what can, and will, ultimately make this song popular -- the fact that other people can sing it too. 

There's no arguing that technology has done things we would've never been able to do otherwise, but as time passes, new advances will come, and what is new now will become obsolete in the distant or near future. What will transcend time and remain are creative songs, strong arrangements, and melodies. And that's what "Lucky Guy" has -- a strong arrangement and an actual, sing-able, melody.#

Best known as the leader of SS501 and beloved for his roles as Yoon Ji Hoo in the hit drama Boys Over Flowers and Baek Seung Jo in Mischievous Kiss, Kim Hyun Joong returns to Manila this time as a solo artist ready to conquer the world with his talent, charm, 4D wit, and heart of gold.

Sparkling Magazine: Tell us about your first mini- Album Break Down.  Which song from the album is your favorite?
Kim Hyun Joong: I prepared a lot for my debut as a solo artist.  I tried so many different things and experimented with various sounds and music genres which you can enjoy when you listen to my album.  All songs are great, but "Break Down" is my favorite.



SM: What did you consider when choosing the songs to be included in your album?
KHJ : I feel the most important thing is the performance on stage, so I chose songs that would be good to perform live.  I trained heavily for the live performances in terms of singing and dancing.

SM: Which musician has influenced you the most?
KHJ: I like so many musicians, but for me Seo Taiji is the most important.

SM: You used to play bass guitar in high school.  Do you want to perform in a band again in the future?
KHJ: Yes- maybe after five more years of singing and dancing I can focus on having my own band and performing other genres of music.

SM: We heard you are a very active football player.  What do you love best about the game?
KHJ:  I was told that Filipinos also like football very much.  What I love about it is that it gets me active:  you can do so many things when playing football and the exercise is very healthy.  I'm part of the FC Men football team (Ed's note: an all star team including JYJ's Junsu [and his twin  Hyung Junho], Yoochun, and Jaejoong, B2ST's Doojoon and Gikwang, 2AM's Changmin, actors Song Joong Ki and Kim Bum, and even Shinhwa's Minwoo, among others).  It isn't a professional football team so we just do what we want and play games whenever we can.

SM: Did you ever imagine you would be an endorser for a beauty brand? How do you feel about representing The Face Shop?
KHJ: I never imagined that I would be an endorser for The Face Shop, but since I've become one I'm very happy and proud.  Since it's the number-one beauty brand in Korea and also a global brand, I feel it will help me as I work to become a global celebrity.

SM:  What's your favorite The Face Shop product?
KHJ:  There are so many choices. But if I had to choose two favorites, it would have to be the BB Creams and the E'thym Moisturizer because I used these most often.

SM: We're curious: what brand of perfume do you use?
KHJ:  I really prefer the baby-powder scent , and since The Face Shop has a perfume with that scent , that's what I  use.

SM: You have very beautiful skin.  What's your daily skin regimen?
KHJ: Due to my profession as a singer and actor, I wear makeup a lot.  I really make it a point to remove my makeup well and to cleanse my face so it stays healthy.

SM:  How do you stay fresh despite your busy schedule and long work hours?
KHJ: The number of hours of work doesn't really matter; what matters is how much stress you receive, how do you deal with it, and how you approach your work.  A positive approach always helps keep me fresh.

SM:  What nail polish color do you like best on girls?
KHJ: Since manicures have turned into nail art I don't look too much on colors anymore- what I look at are the designs and styles.  I prefer simple designs and not those that look too fancy.


SM: A lot of your friends are very active on Twitter.  Do you have plans of setting up your own account?
KHJ: I'm not very fond of online communication so I have no plans of setting up a Twitter account just yet!

SM: K-Pop stars often upload selcas (self capture) of themselves. We're wondering why there are very few selcas of you.
KHJ: I'm not used to taking selcas so I don't usually take and upload selcas online!

SM:  please tell us about your alien character U:Zoosin.  Did the concept behind this character come from you?
KHJ: Yes, the concept of the character came from me!  Fortunately my fans love the character so much that we decided to do projects involving U:Zoosin.  Hopefully in the future I can do more promotions for this character.


SM:  If you could travel to space, which planet would you visit and who would you take with you?
KHJ: I want to go to space with my wife in the future.  I have no specific planet in mind; I'd just like to see the earth from space.


SM: If you could bring a product from The Face Shop with you to space, which one would you bring?
KHJ:  Since outer space is closer to the sun, I'll definitely bring sun block (Laughs)


SM:  You’ve received so much success ever since your debut.  What are you most proud of among all your accomplishments?
KHJ:  As a solo singer I feel very fortunate to have received much success for my first mini-album.  I'll try so many more things in the future so I can be an even more successful artist.


SM:  What can we expect from you next once promotions for Break Down have been completed?
KHJ: I will release my second mini-album in October; I will have a Japan tour after that.  An Asian tour will follow till sometime in February next year and then I will definitely be working on a new drama.


SM: What do you love most about your fans?
KHJ: The love from my fans is what is most important to me; it's because of this love from so many people that I'm able to do so many things.  I want to say thank you to all my fans for their support and Love.  My success right now wouldn't be possible without them.  Thank You!


SM: Anything to say to your fans here in the Philippines?
KHJ: I will try my best to come back to the Philippines for a concert next year.  Please look forward to more new things and wonderful performances from me- I hope everyone can continue to love me!

Favorite Japanese movies?
 “い ま、会いにゆきます” (Ima Ai ni Yukimasu, Be With You) and “Crows ZERO”. But “Be With You” is my most favorite. Wish I have a chance to act in it. Coincidentally, I had told my management company director, “If there is such a role in the script received, please give it to me” (laughs)

Favorite Japan artiste?
When I was younger, I like X JAPAN, I even made a cover of it. There’s also B’z amd Dragon Ash that I also like.

Yoon Ji Hoo from “Boys Over Flowers” and Baek Seung Jo from “Playful Kiss”, which one resembles yourself?
 Neither one resembles. Totally doesn’t resembles at all(laughs)

During your off days, how do you spend it?
If it’s an off day, definitely have to rest (laughs) If I have 1 day off, I would spend my time slowly at home.But if I have a week, I would want to travel. Now I’m most interested is the Antarctica. But it is impossible to go within a week, so I look forward to it when I retire. (laughs)

Favorite place in Japan?
Emm…. Roppongi. I like te atmosphere. There’s also Shibuya which is good too. I like places where there are lots of people.

In future, anything you like to try in Japan?
There is a lot of places that I want to visit, but if it is something that I want to do, that will definitely be holding a concert a Tokyo Dome. #
