일본가수와 비교해 제작 비용이 저렴한 케이팝 가수의 음반이 높은 순위를 차지하게 됐다는 시각도 내놓았다. 야마구치 씨는 “레코드사가 한국가수의 CD 가격을 낮춰 현지인이 쉽게 살 수 있도록 만들었다. 한국가수가 비교적 저렴한 가격의 CD를 내며 시장을 확장해가면서 일본가수가 성장할 기회가 점차 사라지는 것 같다”라고 의견을 밝혔다.

그렇다면 케이팝이 설 자리를 넓혀가기 위해서는 무엇을 보완해야 할까. 히라가 씨는 “유사한 성격의 아티스트가 많다. 개성을 살려야 할 것”이라고 지적했다. 또한 “지속적으로 이슈를 만드는 스타급 가수가 적다. 영향력 있는 가수가 나와야 한다”라고 덧붙였다. 스기오카 씨는 “한국가수는 활동 이외의 측면(사생활 노출이나 소문 등)이 주목받을 때가 많다. 좋은 이미지를 쌓아가야 할 것”이라고 짚었다.

[FEATURE] Kim Hyun Joong to release more music in December and January

After focusing on his acting career, SS501‘s Kim Hyun Joong is more than ready to turn the focus back to singing. He’s been in high-drive lately, releasing back to back albums in the same year and delving into styles and concepts that most singers go through in double the time.

Why the rush? Kim Hyun Joong took the time to explain why, as well as some news on future releases through his interview with Segye Ilbo.

The singer stated, “First of all, I’m planning to release a ballad in December through a digital single with a unique music video to go with it. In January, I’m going to release another mini-album. Considering my schedule, I don’t have room to space them out. I’m also going on a tour next year to meet up with more of my fans so I’m trying to have some good songs under my belt before then. As for an official studio album, I think I prefer a mini-album with five or so songs.”

His recent “Lucky Guy” comeback was inspired by the movie ‘Ocean’s Eleven‘. He stated, “You can consider the album mainstream, but also modern. My concept is freedom. I remember seeing the movie Ocean’s Eleven and just thinking to myself, ‘That’s it.’ I set the physical concept first and then began to collect songs.”

He continued, “As for ‘Lucky Guy‘, it sounds like a song that would be performed with a band on stage, but I actually have a fun choreography to go with it. It’s a song that I made out of hope of creating something that’s considered band music, but also something that you can dance to. I made sure my outfits were also colorful to give that ‘dandy guy’ look.”

He’s already sold 110,000 album units so far, but that shouldn’t be a surprise considering he’s Kim Hyun joong.

“There’s a limit as to how far you can go as a dance singer. When I’m older, I’m sure I’ll be pursuing different genres, so when I have some time to myself, I want to sit down and try music that I’ve always wanted to pursue since I was younger. I actually love band music and play the bass myself. Still, I want to learn more instruments and create something all my own. At the beginning of SS501′s debut, I liked the thought of being a celebrity, but I think that’s inevitable as a young teen. Either way, I think it’s important to not be content with where you are now and to always work towards improving yourself.”

On the topic of dating, he said, “All of the girls I meet are strictly for business purposes so I don’t have anyone I’m dating. If I do have one, I guess pictures would be taken of us.”

Kim Hyun Joong, who released his second mini album, said, “I want to perform music that has a reversal.”

Singer and actor Kim Hyun Joong cast off his tough and charismatic image and made a comeback with an image of a mischievous gambler. Kim Hyun Joong released his second mini album entitled “Lucky” on October 11, and it was different from his first solo album entitled “Break Down” by utilizing a funky band sound.

Kim Hyun Joong gave an interview at Coex Intercontinental Hotel on October 10, and he said, “I have wanted to present music that has a reversal. Many people seemed to expect that I would release music that would be similar to my previous album ‘Break Down,’ and I think that I successfully provided a reversal in light of that. People will evaluate my album, but I personally want to give 100 points to my album as I had put my utmost efforts into create this album.” He revealed that he was satisfied with his album. He continued, “I think that I have to play music that my fans and ordinary people can enjoy. ‘Break Down’ was not a kind of music that people will pay to download the songs, but I thought that people might be able to enjoy the new album while watching and listening to the songs. This time, I focused on music that everybody can pleasantly sing along to.” The album “Lucky” contains a total of five songs including funky rock music with the up tempo track “Lucky Guy,” which is based on the sound of his band, a funky rock-and-roll track entitled “Do You Like That?” the ballad song entitled “I Am Your Man,” and a song with lovely lyrics entitled “U.” Kim Hyun Joong is highly interested in band music, and he came up with the idea of creating “band music that can be listened to while dancing.” Members of the rock band “Day Break” and the funk soul band “Common Ground” participated in playing the music.

Kim had presented the image of a tough man with his previous album “Break Down,” but this time, he had to create the image of a “preppy guy” who is stylish and mischievous, so he tried to lose weight and successfully lost five kilograms by exercising. Kim Hyun Joong emphasized his new image by saying, “I wanted to create popular and stylish music. I took a break for one month before I moved to a different agency last year, and I became totally dejected at that time. I felt pressure and I wanted to do something at that time.” He reportedly already made plans for his next two years, and he personally revealed that he had already thought about the concept for his next album that will be released next year in January from the moment when he debuted. ▲Do you have any particular expectations for this album?

Kim Hyun Joong: “I just hope a lot of people listen and enjoy it. I’m interested in hearing what the public has to say about it, more than my actual fans. The sales for ‘Break Down‘ weren’t bad, but I wasn’t satisfied, which is why I focused a bit more on the music this time.”

▲You are only promoting your album for three short weeks. Is that enough time?

Kim Hyun Joong: “I wish I could promote it a while longer, but I have a performance that was scheduled prior and wanted to release the album before then. It’s too bad, but I’ll work hard during the time I have.”

Kim Hyun Joong: “I too was an idol star, but I don’t really have any particular thoughts about that. The music the idols are performing now might just be the music pushed by their agency. The stubborn ones will probably break out and produce a solo album to do the kind of music that’s right for them.”

▲Have any junior idols caught your attention?

Kim Hyun Joong: “Not sure, I didn’t really watch any music programs, except when I was promoting “Break Down”. I’m keeping a close eye on SNSD though, because I know they are making a comeback at a date similar to my own.”

▲Aren’t you a little intimidated to go head-to-head with the SNSD girls?

▲Any plans to go back into acting?

Kim Hyun Joong: “I think I could maybe in June of next year. Nothing specific has been decided yet, but looking at my schedule, I think that would be best. I played two gentle roles for the last two, so this time I want to play the rough, bad boy.”

▲What appeals more to you, acting or singing?

Kim Hyun Joong: “Both have their own appeals. With my music, I can show you what I’m about, but when you act, you live the life of another person. When I sing, I want to act, and when I act, I want to sing (laughs). It’s just hard to do both, is all. With singing, though, you get rated once a week on music programs so it definitely keeps you grounded.”

Kim Hyun Joong: “The media and the public shocked me by asking if I was really releasing another album already. I thought maybe I rushed myself, but it’s something I put a lot of effort into and I want to work hard until early next year. After releasing "Break Down" earlier this year to commercial success, Kim Hyun Joong is back with a fresh new sound. How does "Lucky Guy" fare? Not bad, not bad at all.

"Lucky Guy" is all about quirk, attitude, and chaos -- fun chaos. It sounds like something straight out of a TV sitcom opening song from the early 2000's, with the finesse and production technology of 2011. The song is fun to listen to, and rather than barraging listeners with all these fancy auto-tune variants and overused synth loops, we're given actual instruments playing actual melodies.

The quirk of this song is highly dependent on the instruments - that gutsy electric guitar line and those raw, yet clean and smooth drums, but surprisingly, Hyun Joong's vocals do a lot for the overall effect too. 

Let's be honest. Hyun Joong has never been the best singer in K-Pop. He's easily out-sung by many, many other idols. However, he's always been consistently okay, and sometimes he has his good moments -- and "Lucky Guy" is one of them. His light and airy vocals are a good contrast to the arrangement, and prevent the song from going all over the place. All the other elements of the song are so intense that if someone with a bigger, sharper voice were to sing it, the song would be too much.

"Lucky Guy" starts rather simply, but another thing that draws in listeners is how fast the dynamics change. They don't change every two seconds or anything; you're still able to take in all the individual parts, but before you get bored, something changes, leaving you at the edge of your seat in anticipation of what's going to happen next.

The hook is also consistent with the entire theme running through the song -- it sticks with you, but it's not too repetitive. It's a hook you can actually hum to yourself, because you remember it and because it's humanly possible to sing it without fancy studio tricks. And that's what can, and will, ultimately make this song popular -- the fact that other people can sing it too. 

There's no arguing that technology has done things we would've never been able to do otherwise, but as time passes, new advances will come, and what is new now will become obsolete in the distant or near future. What will transcend time and remain are creative songs, strong arrangements, and melodies. And that's what "Lucky Guy" has -- a strong arrangement and an actual, sing-able, melody.#

Following the launch of his first solo mini-album album “Break Down” four months ago, Kim Hyun Joong returns this week with another mini-album “Lucky“. Although many people felt that his return is too soon, Kim Hyun Joong thinks that it has been long overdue. “Many people are saying how quickly that I’m coming out again, but I personally think that a long time has passed. There will be another single album in January.”

“The debut solo album was able to reflect the solo side of myself and this time I’m presenting my music to everyone. I have put in a lot of effort in the music, it suits everyone. I had wanted to show that I can perform on stage alone through “Break Down”, in my new songs, I hope everyone can pay more attention to my music.”
In the new album, Kim Hyun Joong participated widely in album production and worked closely with C-Luv who has produced “Rainism” for Rain and MBLAQ‘s debut album, along with Steven Lee who has been working on not only Kim Hyun Joong’s debut album but also fellow SS501 members, Heo Young Saeng and Kim Kyu Jong‘s debut albums as well. The album has attracted much attention due to the wide selection of musical styles, ranging from punk rock to American R&B through the five songs.

Kim Hyun Joong will be showing his maturing singing skills in “I Am Your Man“. He was also honest to add, “frankly, people do not harbor much curiosity in my music, that’s why I want to show more, wanting to sing songs that are appealing to everyone. I know people’s expectations are not so high, so I have selected music that are relatively simple.”

“The acoustic version of “I Am Your Man” gives a calm feeling, I have been receiving vocal training so there will be many changes, including my way of singing. Female fans may like the sound, my voice has indeed improved progressively.”

Title track “Lucky Guy” embodies rock band music that speaks of Kim Hyun Joong’s style, a genre that he loves. “In fact, I am very worried that the public could not accept such a song, and we had also invited a band and guitarist for live accompaniment. Although it is band music, I hope that we could present a song that we can dance to even without the presence of a band. The most exciting is club music, but since it no longer exists, I feel that band music would add more flavor.”

The title track “Lucky Guy” is Kim Hyun Joong’s favorite, recording for the song has also been very interesting. “In a part of the song, there is a howl, I have wanted to put a female’s voice initially, but it’s really hard to find that kind of sexy voice, so I used a wolf’s howl instead.”

Kim Hyun Joong said, the launch of this album complies with all of his requirements. It is not difficult to tell that he has put in a lot of effort from the pictures of the album cover. “I hope to be recognized in the things I want to do, not because of somebody’s demands.”

The album promotions will only last for three weeks due to various promotional engagements in Asia. Kim Hyun Joong too expressed regret, “three weeks is really short, unfortunately, but there are scheduled activities and to release the new album during this time although somewhat regretful, I will do my best. Former SS501 member, current actor and singer Kim Hyun Joong talked about the possibilities of SS501 getting back together. 

Kim Hyun Joong stated at a recent meeting with reporters, “Honestly, there are members I still keep in touch with and others I don’t. 5 of us never really all got together in one occasion. When the members get together we talk about being true to what we are doing now”. 

Kim Hyun Joong also added, “What the fans want would be when the album would be released but it would be disappointing to promise something and to not be able to come through. The name SS501 belongs to a different company and for 4 companies to produce one album together is realistically not easy. The SS501 members have left DSP Media and other than Kyu Jong and Young Saeng signing with the same company, they all have gone their separate ways with a different management company. The team’s name SS501 still belongs to DSP Media currently.

Kim released his second solo, which includes five songs, on the 11th.

Kim said, “My last dream as a singer and dancer is to hold a free concert at a large venue, like in Olympic Park, and invite my fans from all over the world. Then I want to quit dancing.”

He added, “When I’m in my thirties, I will make different kinds of songs. I majored in bass but I will learn how to play other instruments and study music to make my own music. I want to become a band musician.”
